Getting to the top of the pile in the fight for uni places

This year the fight is really on for university places, with students seeing even more competition than ever for fewer places. According to recent figures, some 570,556 university applications had already been received by UCAS by the end of January 2010.

To put things in perspective, this is a rise of over 100,000 applications or 23% compared with the same time last year, and if demand continues at the present rate, there may be between 750,000 and 800,000 applications by the summer – potentially leaving as many as 300,000 students without places at university this year.
