£500 FOR THE MOST UNSELFISH RUGBY PLAYER!...

...is just one of several thousand awards listed in the new edition of Brian Heap's University Scholarships Awards & Bursaries

So if you are an unselfish rugby player at Imperial London, then £500 could be awaiting you. Alternatively if you are a relative of present and retired postal workers from the south west of England, or have parents in the fighting services in Plymouth then there are scholarships at Exeter and finally if you have a sister or a brother at Oxford Brookes then you could get a 10% discount on your fees!

But this represents only the tip of a huge iceberg. Whilst all universities are offering bursaries to students from homes with a low income threshold who are facing top-up fees, it's also estimated that universities and colleges throughout the UK are offering over a million pounds, by way of a wide range of other scholarships, bursaries, various awards, departmental prizes and travelling scholarships for all students.

Aberystwyth and Bangor top the list of universities with the greatest number of awards, each totalling over 80, offering financial incentives over £50,000 and whilst some of these awards favour Welsh students, this year's applicants should check their chosen universities since many institutions have special bursaries for students living in local areas. These include, Leeds, Nottingham, Southampton, Solent (including applicants from the Channel Islands) and for two students interested in applying for engineering, mathematics or physics at Imperial London there could be awards of £2000 if they live within a forty mile radius of Beckington, Somerset!

Academic awards however predominate, from scholarships worth £2000 or £3000 for high scoring applicants placing a university in first place on their application form to those who choose certain subjects. Many scholarships are on offer for science and engineering courses and then more unusually there are, for example Star Scholarships at Coventry University in specific subject areas such as Games Technology and Disaster Management, also ten scholarships worth £1000 each at Bradford in the field of Petroleum Engineering, awards for Geology and mining subjects at the Camborne School of Mines, for Food Science at Nottingham and Veterinary Science at Bristol.

Choral, Instrumental and Organ awards also abound and for the outstanding sports person there are excellent financial opportunities for advancement. There is financial support for Elite and Disabled Athletes at Brighton University, several universities offer cricket awards including Bradford, Glamorgan, Leeds Oxford Brookes and Worcester and for rugby enthusiasts there are scholarships at centres including Hartpury College, Huddersfield and Imperial.

University Scholarships, Awards & Bursaries lists universities alphabetically and in addition has chapters covering professional and commercial awards, sponsorships and sandwich courses by subject, and helpful lists of subject-specific awards for home, EU and international students as well as country-specific awards for overseas applicants.

Compiled by Brian Heap, the UK's leading authority on higher education entry, this book hands students the key to making ends meet, offering them all the details they need in order to apply for and access the various funds available. Other bestselling titles by this author include Degree Course Offers 2009 entry and Choosing Your Degree Course & University.
